Social Action at Temple Ohabei Shalom

News and Events: March 2020

Join us for this month’s actions for tikkun olam and social change in Greater Boston!

This month TOS joins congregations around the country in celebrating the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) Refugee Shabbat! Here’s how you can participate:

  • Share your family’s immigration story on our website:
  • Donate your old cell phones, tablets, and laptops (unlocked and reset) to Syrian refugees living in camps throughout Greece; drop off at the Temple Ohabei Shalom office.
  • Join us for Shabbat services on Friday, March 20, to hear special speaker Jerry Rubin, the head of Jewish Vocational Services, on the national policies and local needs affecting refugees and advocates.
  • Come to Shabbat Morning B’yachad on Saturday, March 21, to participate in local actions that will help immigrant and refugee families.

We are also selling bracelets made by women in a Syrian Refugee Women’s Cooperative in Turkey. These colorful beaded bracelets are $10 each and all proceeds go back to the cooperative. For more info, contact Shoma Dhar.

Volunteer Opportunity: Voter Registration for New Citizens

MIRA, the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, leads voter registration drives directly after naturalization ceremonies on Thursday afternoons from 1:30-2:30 in the area between Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. It is fun and inspiring to help brand new citizens sign up to be able to vote. For more information about this and other volunteer opportunities with MIRA, go to https://live-mira-coalition.pantheonsite.io/get-involved/volunteer/ or e-mail Lori Berry.

Volunteer Opportunity: Assistance for Immigrants and Families in Detention

BIJAN/Beyond, the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network, provides accompaniment and assistance for individuals and families in ICE detention. This can include providing transport to families visiting loved ones, letters of support, or logistical assistance with paperwork. For more information about volunteer opportunities with BIJAN/Beyond, go to https://beyondbondboston.org
