A Yahrzeit is the anniversary of a loved one’s passing. In Judaism it is customary to light a candle or make a donation on that day. We all stand and pray together as we remember your loved one on this day.

There are many ways to honor the memory of our loved ones. At our Temple Ohabei Shalom community we offer these options:
(You may also download this list of options as a PDF file.) If you would like to pursue one of these options please complete the Yahrzeits Remembrance Form or call the Temple office at (617) 277-6610.

 Scroll Book

One of the most beautiful annual traditions at Ohabei Shalom is the listing of the names of our departed in the Scroll Book. This memorial booklet is distributed on Yom Kippur afternoon, before the Yizkor service.

Suggested donation of $18 per name (for those who are not members of the Congregation, $36)

Mishkan T’Filah: A Reform Siddur for Weekdays and Festivals

Two years ago, we introduced a new prayer book, Mishkan T’Filah for use in our services. We need additional copies of this wonderful prayer book and hope that congregants and friends of Ohabei Shalom will dedicate one or more copies so that we will soon have sufficient number for the entire congregation.

$72 (for those who are not members of the Congregation, $100)

Book of Remembrance

The first name that appears in this precious heirloom is that of Judah Touro, who died in 1854. He was the benefactor of many charitable and civic organizations, including the Touro Synagogue in Newport and Ohabei Shalom. The pages of the Book of Remembrance are exquisitely decorated, and each name is inscribed in beautiful calligraphy. As with the yahrzeit plaques, names are automatically listed in the annual Scroll Book and in the appropriate Shabbat Bulletin each year.

$360 (for those who are not members of the Congregation, $540)

Yahrzeit/Memorial Plaques

Loved ones’ names may be inscribed on bronze plaques that are placed on the large tablets located in our main

Sanctuary. Each memorial plaque is illuminated on the Shabbat evening and morning ending the week in which the yahrzeit occurs (on the Hebrew or civil date, according to the wishes of the family). The name is also listed in the Shabbat Bulletin that week, and in the Scroll Book, which is distributed on Yom Kippur (see above).

$720 (for those who are not members of the Congregation, $1,200)

Sanctuary Seats

You may endow a seat in the Sanctuary in honor of any life cycle event—in your own name or in that of a loved one. This is a wonderful way to celebrate a birth or a marriage or to commemorate a life.

$1,800 (for those who are not members of the Congregation, $2,500)

Sanctuary Rows

You may endow a row in the Sanctuary in honor of any life cycle event—in your own name or in that of a loved one. This is a wonderful way to celebrate a birth or a marriage or to commemorate a life.

People of the Book Plaque

These two white marble plaques line the wall of the Sanctuary Foyer as you descend towards Penn Spero Hall. Have your name, or the name of a loved one, etched in gold lettering onto this magnificent tribute to the supporters of the congregation. Space is limited.
