As a community, we address the injustice of food insecurity every year by bringing bags full of groceries with us to the synagogue on Yom Kippur. This act of tzedakah, of giving to those in need, is one of the ways that we work to become inscribed in the Book of Life. We seek to maintain our commitment to three local organizations addressing food insecurity in Greater Boston:
Make a financial donation. All money donated through TOS and designated for the HHD Food Drive will be split between the three organizations. Monetary donations are a great way to give because our partners are able to buy food at a discount, we limit in-person interaction to keep everyone healthy, and if you give through TOS, we can measure our communal impact. For a suggested donation amount, think about how many bags of groceries you would donate in a year and multiply that number by $36. Donations can be made by clicking the link above or mailed to TOS, 1187 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02446. Please write “HHD Food Drive” in the memo.
Donate $25 gift cards to Target, Wal-Mart, and area grocery stores. These will be donated to the Grow Clinic and will allow people to shop for their own groceries and needs. We are happy to accept them by mail or at any in-person service.
Drop off bags of non-perishable items on Yom Kippur. We’ll have volunteers to help sort and deliver the food. We need non-perishable items, especially tuna and whole-grain cereal.
If you have any questions about our Annual Food Drive, please email Spencer Gould on behalf of the TOS Social Action Committee: gouldspence@aol.com.
