Lamed Vavnik Campaign

In 2014, Temple Ohabei Shalom long-time members started the Lamed Vavnik* program to raise significant funds necessary to restore the heart of the community, our historic Sanctuary. The contributions of these Lamed Vavnik donors put TOS in the position to successfully attend to this critical project. The restored Sanctuary serves so many roles bringing our community together as our primary place of worship for High Holiday, B’nei Mitzvah and festival services, and as an event venue which drives additional income.

Last year, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Trustees re-instituted the Lamed Vavnik program.  Two families agreed to make generous matching commitments to encourage Lamed Vavnik donations. Ten families responded by making donations/pledges of $36,000 or more. These donations and matching funds were essential to TOS’s ability to successfully continue to deliver programming and support, filling the budgetary shortfall caused by the pandemic.

Now, we are poised for growth and success despite the challenges of the past year, and we hope to continue our Lamed Vavnik program in order to permanently secure the long-term financial footing of TOS. Our beautiful structure and central location make TOS a preeminent center of Judaism, serving the spiritual, educational and programmatic needs of hundreds of congregants and guests. Proudly serving the Greater Boston community over the past 18 decades, we hope to ensure that TOS will be in a continued position to so serve for decades to come.

*What exactly is a Lamed Vavnik? Jewish lore holds that at any time in history there are 36 righteous people who are quietly responsible for saving the world. These are the Tzadikim Nistarim (hidden righteous ones), also known as the Lamed Vavniks (in Jewish numerology, gematria, Lamed is 30 and Vav is 6).
