The uniqueness of the Trump presidency easily blinds us to the underlying dynamics that gave rise to his election and to his behavior in office. The party polarization that dominates American politics accelerated decades ago, though partisanship seemed to gain even more strength during these past four years. Is there anything that President-elect Biden can do to stem the poisonous atmosphere in our political system? Is any fundamental change possible, or are we in for four years of gridlock?
